About Us

It all started with The Sunflower Food Truck
We were looking at options for supporting ourselves on Cortes Island and Carie had a dream to open a food truck. We came together as a family and made it happen. The food truck opened on Whaletown Road near the Gorge Harbor Marina Resort (GHMR) in the summer of 2020. After one year on the road, the truck operated for two seasons at the GHMR and then operated for one season at the Whaletown ferry terminal.

Commercial Kitchen
During this time, we were asked to provide food to the retail stores on the island and Carie began to do so. After renting commercial kitchens for a couple of years, we decided to build a commercial kitchen on our property. It is certified by VIHA and allows Carie to provide food to the retail stores, to deliver meals to private individuals, to offer hot food at the farmers markets, to do community dinners, and provide catering solutions.

Better at Home – the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program
We began working with the Better at Home (BAH) orgainization in 2023 to operate a Meals on Wheels program for Cortes Island. We have been providing meals through the MOW program since June of 2023 and now deliver weekly meals to BAH clients on Cortes Island.

Family Run Business
Carie and Bruce moved to Cortes in May of 2016 in order to start a family. They love it on the island and have since welcomed two boys.
Carie is the visionary behind the Sunflower Food Services business. She worked in her family restaurant in her younger days and has been involved in the food business for most of her life. She does all of the food preparation.
Bruce does most of the behind the scenes work such as bookkeeping, applying for permits, maintaining the commercial kitchen, and preparing the food truck for operation. He is also the backup delivery driver.

Joel – Part of the ‘Family’
Joel has been with us since day one of opening the Food Truck. He has worn many hats over the years and has been an invaluable part of creating the Sunflower Food Services business. He helps with maintaining everything behind the scenes, works at the Farmers Markets with Carie, and delivers meals to people’s homes on Wednesdays.
He has built his own home on our property and is part of the ‘family’.
